Fall 2026 smells like leather and tobacco, not vanilla

In three days flat, Allure, Esquire and Good Housekeeping all took sugar off the shelf and put leather, tobacco and spice in its place.

On August 22 Allure called its fall trends "adults only"; a day earlier Esquire ran 15 fall colognes, and a day before that Good Housekeeping put out its own "cozy" picks. Three magazines, three days, one list: leather, tobacco, spice, resins instead of sugary vanilla. Vanilla, Allure says, got eaten alive by body mists — the cheap drugstore sprays — so the expensive houses are running for the smoke.

Leather is going mass-market: Burberry Hero Elixir lays it over tobacco and vanilla, and the new Carolina Herrera Stallion Leather Sirocco puts salty, smoky leather on date liqueur. Tobacco with booze is Jazz Club, which Aliénor Massenet built back in 2013 out of pink pepper, rum and dry tobacco leaf; Esquire has it on the fall list again. Spice is growing up too: saffron and cardamom instead of cinnamon-roll cinnamon. Smell Jazz Club once and you'll see where all of this is headed.

How to move your summer shelf into fall without buying anything

A new bottle is optional. Start by spraying over unscented lotion: the oily film holds the molecules longer, and a thin summer scent settles in tighter. Then move the target: instead of your neck, where body heat burns off the top notes in an hour, spray your sweater — wool holds the base until morning. And give it two or three sprays instead of one. What felt suffocating in July just reads as present once it gets cold.

The industry switched sides in three days. All you need is a tub of lotion.
verdictSkip the new bottle. Buy unscented lotion and spray your sweater instead.
