Four more threads about Y2K "rich girl" scent went up the same week. Nobody is shopping for a brand, they're shopping for a moment — and in the nineties that moment smelled of calone, the watermelon-and-sea-air molecule that L'Eau d'Issey and Acqua di Gio are built on. Smell the current version before you pay for an old batch.
Why the vintage bottle doesn't smell like the memory
Jean-Paul Guerlain built Samsara in 1989 on real Mysore sandalwood — the Indian tree that was later put under protection and swapped out for synthetics. The new bottle is different by formula; the old one is different by age: top notes burn off first and leave a heavy base with no spark. On top of that, you remember it on someone else, at an age you no longer are. Buy vintage for the base, not for "the exact same thing".
