A dupe wins the first 20 minutes and loses by hour two

Why a clone almost never equals the original — and when it beats one anyway.

In one week Reddit produced a hundred-plus-comment thread titled "dupes just don't do it for me anymore" and a database of three thousand clones: demand up, faith down. The clone simply has no budget for raw materials. Iris absolute — the extract from a root that spends years drying — is the backbone of a scent, and that is exactly what a dupe swaps out for a cheaper relative. Which is why the copy matches at the opening and drifts apart in the drydown: whatever is still on your skin a couple of hours in.

When a dupe really is better than the original

But the week's two-hundred-comment thread was about clones that smell better than the thing they copy. People have been calling Ariana Grande Cloud a budget Baccarat Rouge 540 for years: both ride on ambroxan, the salty-woody molecule with the "expensive" trail, except Cloud drops the sharp edge that puts so many people off the original. That is the difference between a DNA clone and a full dupe: the first takes the skeleton and does its own thing, the second copies note for note and breaks right there. Want the same idea, only easier to wear? Go with the first kind.

Legally it is all quite clear: the formula is fair game, because a smell is not protected the way a piece of work is — the name and the bottle are, that is trademark. Which is how the green Guerlain Herbes Troublantes by Thierry Wasser, mint and rosemary laid over musk, already has three perfectly legal clones, and this week somebody put them head to head. One rule: never buy a dupe blind off a matching chart — smell it on skin three hours in, because that is where it either survives or it does not.

verdictA dupe is its own scent for the money, not the original at a discount.
