The Spent Grenade. Blew up the shelf. The elevator still smells of it. Four perfumers — Ropion, Polge, Benaim, Michalon — packed patchouli, orchid and tea into a grenade, and the mass market lived in its shadow for a decade. Then flankers diluted the name, and batches went sweeter and thinner. Now it gives away the wearer’s generation. Half fair: the genre lives on, under other names. Fallen, but as a founder: the genre he fathered still sells — under other names.
